The art of waiting

The best moments rarely announce themselves. On patience, attention, and the quiet reward of staying a little longer than everyone else.

There is a certain kind of photograph that only exists after the fourth minute. Not the fourth frame — the fourth minute. You arrive, you take the obvious picture, and then you stand there doing nothing, and that is when the second picture appears.

I have never been able to teach this, because it is not a technique. It is a willingness to be bored in public. Most people leave at minute two. The light does not change its mind at minute two.

The same rule holds outside photography. A conversation that ends early is a conversation about the first thing that came up. A decision made in a hurry is a decision about the first option that sounded reasonable. Waiting is not passivity; it is refusing to answer a question before you have heard it properly.

So: stay a little longer. Not forever. Just longer than everyone else.
