Old houses keep time differently. There is a window, and the light comes in, and by three o’clock it has moved to a particular brick, and everyone in the room knows what hour it is without looking at a clock.
I photographed that wall for years and never once got it right, because a photograph flattens the light into a stain.
What I wanted was the sound of the room. You cannot put that in a frame, so the wall stands in for it.
